Meet Mary Helen, L&D Nurse Intern

Here's an interview with one of our latest nurse interns, Mary Helen Crowder. She has spent most of her working life in the healthcare field, and now she's making her way into the delivery room. Check out what she has to say about her variety of experiences and why she chose to pursue a career in healthcare!

What is your clinical background, and how long have you been an RN?
MH: I graduated in May '08 from nursing school. I have a clinical background prior to being a Nurse as well. I was a Recreational Therapist and worked with children with disabilities for 10 years. During this time I taught children how to ride horses. This is such a wonderful experience for children as it fosters their self-esteem &8212; and while they are having fun, they are working on gross and fine motor skills, in a hospital setting. This is definitely my passion and something I enjoy very much.

What is one of the most memorable and touching moments from your entire career in the healthcare field?
MH: Last spring we had a 12-year-old speak for the first time while he was riding one of the recreational therapy horses. There is no monetary value that can put on that. It is all intrinsic. Just like with this position, I truly enjoy what I am doing every single day. I feel blessed to be in my position. I love getting to know the patients on a level that promotes trust. That way, even though they can be in a sometimes unfamiliar, rapidly changing environment, they still have a connection with their RN.

Have you had any unique or touching experiences thus far as an RN in the L&D internship?
MH: I had a patient whose husband had just returned from Iraq. He arrived just in time to make the delivery. It took him three days to get here, and he had to get special permission to leave for her delivery. Her mother had previously passed away, and being that they are from Alaska, she did not have much family local to the area. This was a special time in their lives, and we as a unit really wanted to make it as memorable and accommodating as possible. I went out and got balloons the next day for both them and the baby. I think little things like this can really go a long way with patients. If you look at the bigger picture, we are really blessed. This patient's situation helped give me perspective — there are people putting their lives at stake every day and here we are bringing new life into the world. We are really lucky to live where we live and have the freedoms that we do. This couple was featured on the news as well, and it was a really exciting event for the department.

What attracted you to Henrico Doctors’ Hospital? How do you think we set ourselves apart from other hospitals in the area?
MH:I was a prior Henrico Doctors’ Hospital employee for six years. I worked at the Parham campus. I came back to Henrico Doctors’ because we take care of our nurses. We take care of our veterans and recognize them, as well as the new people coming in. It’s the little things like awards ceremonies, gift cards, etc. that go along way. We also have a great benefits and 401K package as well when compared to other places of employment.

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?
MH: At work? It would be to be in two places at once!

Nurses Needed for New Transitional-Care Unit at Forest Campus

Henrico Doctors' Hospital has a new transitional-care unit at our Forest Campus, and we need RNs with experience in ICU, ER and cardiac care.

We're looking for highly motivated professionals to join our collaborative team of nurses who openly coach each other and share knowledge; at the same time that the TCU nurses are encouraged to take ownership of their individual nursing practice, they are all committed to the success of the unit.

With an extremely high level of support from the Nurse Manager and Nurse Director of the unit, the TCU nurses will provide aggressive clinical treatment and monitoring of patients with acute ailments, including coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, diabetes, and COPD, among others.

TCU RNs will undergo unit-specific orientation and enjoy a low three-to-one nurse-to-patient ratio with an 80/20 percent split in RN/PCT staffing. Nurses will also have virtually limitless possibilities for career growth, including unit-based continuing education, ICU skills training, clinical ladder, and opportunities to gain ACLS, CCRN, and other advanced nursing certifications.

If you're interested in joining the nursing team at our new TCU, visit the job search page and search for keyword "TCU".
