Pharmacy Practice Residency Program

National Matching Service Number: 164513

Thank you for your interest in the Henrico Doctors' Hospital residency program. Our program provides excellent training to pharmacists who wish to increase their acute-care skills in a structured program. During the many experiences (or "rotations") of the residency program, residents are able to, as licensed pharmacists, assume considerable responsibility for their patients. Under the guidance of a preceptor, residents are able to perform medication use assessment and monitoring, attend rounds, perform patient teaching, answer drug information questions, participate in projects, and take responsibility for many other duties.

The residency program based at Henrico Doctors' Hospital is part of the Richmond HCA Hospitals network. All required rotations and staffing requirements are at the Henrico Doctors' Hospital - Forest campus. However, electives may be taken at other facilities in the Richmond HCA network, such as the Chippenham/Johnston-Willis (CJW) residency program.

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital – Forest department of pharmacy is a clinically progressive, high-technology department which provides pharmaceutical care to the 340-bed hospital, as well as to select outpatient areas. Specialty areas of the hospital include oncology, solid organ transplant (kidneys), neonatology, cardiology, internal medicine, and critical care. Providing services to all of these areas, the department is recognized as a key provider of patient care. Technology is continually integrated and updated to provide an advanced practice environment. Technological advances include off-site pharmacist order entry, automated IV manufacture, robotic medication cart fill, robotic medication drug delivery, automated dispensing cabinets and electronic bar-code medication administration.

The residency program, accredited by ASHP, is an extension of these services and provides both an opportunity for the pharmacists at Henrico Doctors' Hospital - Forest to provide training to new practitioners, as well as an opportunity for new practitioners to develop their skills in real-world situations, but within a structured training program. The program has preceptors who are dedicated to teaching, and is especially strong in ambulatory care, critical care, and patient education.
