The exchange of a failing organ for a life-giving one was once considered a daring, last-resort option. But decades of successful transplants, those that offer long-term survival and a genuinely superior quality of life, have made them virtually commonplace. Today, doctors recognize that organ transplants are often the best, sometimes the only, choice to make for some patients.
For over a decade, the people of Central Virginia, and even abroad, have relied on our transplant services. In 1990, our transplant staff was approved for heart and kidney transplants, and we performed our first pediatric heart transplant in 1991. In that time, we have performed hundreds of successful transplants, including more than 147 heart and 750 kidney replacements. In doing so, we have helped hundreds of people have a second chance at life.
