Meet Roxanne Cherry

Roxanne Cherry, MS MPS has worked in Psychosocial Oncology in various capacities since 1977. She received her BA in Religious Studies from Stonehill College in 1975. In 1977 she became the research associate to the Principal Investigator of the first collaborative psychosocial research group funded by the National Cancer Institute. Through her work with Arthur Schmale, MD, she first learned the import & impact of psychosocial concerns for cancer patients, their families & their health care providers. After earning her Master’s in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University in 1999, she earned a Master’s of Science degree in Patient Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002. Since May of that year she has been the Cancer Center Chaplain at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital (with a few years break following the death of her husband). In this role she provides spiritual & emotional support to cancer patients, their families and the staff. She is a member of the Palliative Care Team and an Advance Care Planning Facilitator.

Meet Susan Guckenberg

Susan Guckenberg, MSW, LCSW has over 30 years of social work experience. Over half of those have been dedicated to serving the oncology population. She received her Master in Social Work degree from the University of Minnesota in 1980. In 2005, she completed requirements in Virginia as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She is a past member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Association of Oncology Social Work and has received certification through the Board of Oncology Social Work Certification.

Her role includes individual and family supportive counseling, support group facilitation, direct social work intervention to the oncology population served at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. She also serves as a member of the inpatient palliative care team and serves as a Advanced Care Facilitator for the Honoring Choices Virginia program.

Meet Carrie Schaeffer

Carrie Schaeffer, LCSW, has been an oncology social worker at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital for 10 years. In her role, Carrie provides individual and group counseling to adults affected by cancer. She also manages Every Woman’s Life – an outreach program that provides free health screenings to uninsured women.

Carrie received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia. She then received her Master of Science in Social Work at Columbia University during which time she completed a yearlong fellowship in Oncology Social Work at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Hospital. Her professional interests include breast cancer, women’s healthcare advocacy, bereavement counseling, and caregiver support. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, three children and two dogs, reading and cooking.
