Richmond, Va. (June 18, 2015) – HCA Virginia’s Henrico Doctors’ Hospital is now offering Asleep Deep Brain stimulation (DBS) surgery to patients as a well-recognized treatment that improves motor symptoms of patients with early and advanced Parkinson’s disease.

“HCA Virginia is focused on helping patients with movement disorders,” said Dr. Matthew Boyce, medical director of the Deep Brain Stimulation Program at Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals. “By offering Asleep DBS at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, we are able to provide more options for treating the symptoms of patients with Parkinson’s disease.”

The new advancement allows neurosurgeons to perform DBS surgery with the guidance of an MRI in the operating room. This allows the patient to remain asleep for the entire surgery. Conventional DBS surgery, for treatment of conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, requires that patients be conscious during the procedure. Asleep DBS can provide a more comfortable experience for the patient.

DBS improves the symptoms of Parkinson’s by directing electrical stimulation to either the subthalamic nucleus or the globus pallidus interna. These small structures are located about eight centimeters beneath the surface of the frontal cortex in the brain.

“This procedure represents a major step forward in our ability to treat complex neurological diseases,” said David Donaldson, chief operating officer at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.
