Henrico Doctors' Hospital August 05, 2019

Richmond, VirginiaHCA Virginia's Henrico Doctors' Hospital has been recognized for multiple achievements in women's care by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals. These include the 2019 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™; the 2019 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award™; and the 5-Star recipient for vaginal and C-section deliveries and gynecologic procedures.

"This continued national recognition is a testament to our women's care team for their exceptional efforts in providing high-quality patient-centered care," said Will Wagnon, chief executive officer of Henrico Doctors' Hospital. "We have established a trusted reputation throughout the community, and strive to exceed expectations for all those we serve."

The Labor and Delivery Excellence Award places Henrico Doctors' in the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated for the exceptional care of mothers during and after labor and delivery

The 2019 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award also places Henrico Doctors' among a select group in the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated for providing outstanding quality outcomes in gynecologic surgery, including hysterectomies and surgeries related to the female reproductive system.

To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance in these areas, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcomes data for virtually every hospital in each of the 15 states that provide all-payer state data for years 2015 through 2017. Healthgrades found that the variation in hospital performance makes a significant difference in terms of clinical outcomes.

Healthgrades found that there is a significant variation in hospital quality for both labor and delivery and gynecologic surgery.

  • From 2015 to 2017, if all hospitals included in the analysis performed similarly to those that received the Healthgrades Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 105,690 patients1.
  • From 2015 through 2017, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Labor and Delivery Excellence Award had, on average, a 39.2% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award1.
  • From 2015 through 2017, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award had, on average, a 43.5 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award1.
  • From 2015 to 2017, if all hospitals in the analysis performed similarly to those receiving the Healthgrades Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 10,366 patients1.

Additionally, THE 5-STAR RATING for vaginal and C-section deliveries indicates that Henrico Doctors' clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected in these areas. According to Healthgrades, there is a significant variation in hospital quality between those that have received 5-stars and those that have not. For instance:

  • From 2015 through 2017, patients having a vaginal and C-section delivery in hospitals rated 5-stars have, on average, a lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals rated 1-star1.
