Our programs

Smoking Cessation Program

The American Lung Association Freedom From Smoking program is offered periodically throughout the year. The program takes a one-size fits all approach with ample group interaction, consisting of eight sessions over seven weeks.

Lung Cancer Support Group

Designed for men and women with lung cancer and held the 2nd Tuesday of every month.

The Cancer caregivers support group is open to anyone caring for a person with cancer. Our meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 4:30pm

Gynecological cancer support group

We are open to any woman affected by a gynecological cancer. The group is open-ended and meets every month. Most months speakers present new information dictated by the needs and wants of the group. Registration is not required.

Research has demonstrated that women who participate in a support group following a cancer diagnosis experience a better quality of life due to the support and information offered in a group setting.

American Cancer Society offers Look Good Feel Better: helping women with cancer, to women receiving cancer treatment. Held six times a year, every other month, the two-hour workshop starts in February on the third Monday at 1:00pm

For anyone diagnosed with lymphedema, this support group meets at the first floor boardroom at Retreat Doctors’ Hospital every third Tuesday of the month from February through October at 6:30pm

Meet Susan Guckenberg

Susan Guckenberg, MSW, LCSW has over 30 years of social work experience. Her role includes individual and family supportive counseling, support group facilitation and direct social work intervention to the oncology population served at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. She also serves as a member of the inpatient palliative care team and serves as an Advanced Care Facilitator for the Honoring Choices Virginia program.
