Cardiac catheterization, also called coronary arteriogram or coronary angiography, is a test your doctor may request if he or she suspects you have a blockage in the coronary arteries that feed your heart muscle. This test is done by a cardiologist, a heart specialist.
A catheter (a small tube) is inserted into an artery in your groin or arm and guided to your heart. There it is placed into each of the main coronary arteries and dye is injected. This dye shows the location and size of any blockage in the artery. The cardiologist studies each artery and decides your best course of treatment.
Cardiac catheterization labs
The cardiac catheterization procedure rooms at Henrico Doctors' Hospital are equipped with the latest monitoring and imaging equipment and are available 24 hours a day. Among the many procedures performed are balloon angioplasty, coronary and carotid artery stenting, peripheral diagnostic angiograms, stenting of peripheral vessels and other techniques to remove plaque and restore blood flow to the heart. The lab also performs diagnostic catheterization tests and transesophageal ECHOs to determine whether blood vessels are blocked.
Cardiac arrhythmias are disruptions in the rhythm of the heart’s electrical system. The Henrico Doctors’ Hospital team of specially trained electrophysiology nurses and anesthesiologists will work with the electrophysiologist to determine if these disturbances are life-threatening. These disorders can be treated with medications or with a wide range of electrophysiology, mapping, and ablation procedures as well as devices, such as a pacemaker or defibrillator (ICD). Our lab features new state-of-the-art equipment allowing us to treat arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats, using the most advanced surgical techniques for:
- Atrial fibrillation (AFIB) (the most common heart rhythm disorder)
- Atrial flutter tachycardia (heart beats too fast)
- Bradycardia (heart beats too slow)
- Supraventricular tachycardia
- Wolf Parkinson White syndrome
- Ventricular tachycardia
- Neurogenic disorders such as syncope
- Other complex arrhythmias
Types of heart surgery we perform include:
- Minimally-invasive valve surgery
- Aortic valve replacement
- Mitral valve replacement
- Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
TAVR – Transcatheter aortic valve replacement
TAVR is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that repairs the heart valve without removing the old, damaged valve. Instead, it wedges a replacement valve into the aortic valve’s place. The surgery may be called a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). In this video, Dr. Robert Levitt, from Henrico Cardiology Associates, discusses the TAVR procedure and how this groundbreaking procedure is performed.
