Spine care

Spine specialists, who can be orthopedists or neurosurgeons, diagnose and treat injuries, trauma and diseases related to the spine. Spine care doctors also offer care for herniated discs, nerve damage, sciatica, neck pain or chronic back pain.

Treatments for back and neck pain

We always prioritize nonsurgical treatments for neck and back issues, but certain conditions require surgery. Even then, for your benefit, we will use minimally invasive surgery whenever possible.

Nonsurgical treatments

At the end of the day, what sets our spine care program apart is the personalized approach our back and neck pain specialists provide. We make a point to get to know you so we can properly address how your pain and discomfort impact your everyday lifestyle.

Prior to recommending surgery, we will typically first try to remedy your pain through nonsurgical means such as:

  • Medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Spinal injections

Minimally invasive spine surgery

Minimally invasive spine surgery is the latest in surgical technology. By using smaller incisions and instruments, we can offer you less pain, less scarring, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery. In many cases, if your condition allows for minimally invasive surgery, you are able to go home soon after surgery — sometimes even the same day.

Minimally invasive procedures we offer include:

  • Artificial cervical disk spinal surgery
  • Decompression procedures for cervical, thoracic and lumbar stenosis
  • Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty
  • Microdiscectomy
  • Spinal fusion
  • Treatments for cervical, thoracic and lumbar herniated discs

Preoperative education classes

To help prepare you for surgery and recovery, we offer preoperative spinal education classes at both our main hospital and our sister hospital, Parham Doctors' Hospital.

Neck and back preparation

Our preoperative classes are designed to help you prepare for surgery and at-home recovery. They are provided by our spine program coordinator and also include instructions about therapy.

While recovering at home, you are encouraged to have a coach, who can be a family member, friend or caregiver. The coach is invited to attend the class with you.

During class, the spine program coordinator will work with you and your coach to be sure you are properly progressing and to ensure satisfaction throughout the entire care experience.

Class schedule

Cervical (neck) surgery class meets Thursdays at 9:30am at Parham Doctors' Hospital, as well as Fridays at 9:30am here at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.

Lumbar (back) spine surgery class meets Thursdays at 1:00pm at Parham Doctors' Hospital, as well as Fridays at 1:00pm here at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.

If you would like more information about registration or the class itself, please contact our Spine Program Coordinator at (804) 967-5352.

Advances in spinal surgeries
